Associate Professor of Probability Theory Meelis Käärik has been reappointed as the Head of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics.

On 27 November, the Council of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics elected Associate Professor of Probability Theory Meelis Käärik as Head of the Institute. He will hold this position until 31 December 2027.


In addition to leading the Institute and teaching, Käärik is also Programme Director of the English-language Master's programme in Insurance and Financial Mathematics. One doctoral thesis and 36 master's theses have been defended under Meelis Käärik's supervision. Additionally, he has helped organize several international conferences, developed collaboration between the University of Tartu and Swedbank, and been a co-author of numerous research publications. In 2019, under Meelis Käärik's leadership, the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics launched the Industrial Master's Program in Quantitative Analysis, which allows master's students to better align their studies and work and enhances collaboration between the institute and companies.

Meelis Käärik will continue in his position from 1 January 2024 and his term of office will be three years. He was initially elected as Head of the Institute on 1 January 2021.
